Seventeen-year-old Abby Yoon is determined to help children lead healthier lives through
proper nutrition and physical activity. In America,14%of children do not get more than one
meal a day,and many urban families live in food deserts, where access to fresh food is
limited.Yoon saw the need to address this issue and founded the Sustainable Hunger
Initiative, focusing on providing healthy food and educating communities about nutrition.
One of Yoon's first projects was a community garden. This garden has produced over
3,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables, which have been donated to local family centers
and soup kitchens.Yoon believes that growing their own food fosters a closer connection to
what they eat, while ensuring access to essential nutrients.Additionally, her group has
collaborated with local farmers and ranchers to donate more than 45,000 pounds of locally
raised beef to those in need.To complement the food donations,Yoon also offers cooking and
nutrition demonstrations, teaching people how to prepare healthy meals.
Yoon's vision goes beyond providing food. She wants to empower communities to become
self-sufficient."The community garden can serve as a medium for nutrition education,"Yoon
says. Her initiative encourages others to start their own gardens and learn about sustainable
food practices.
Recognizing that a healthy lifestyle also includes physical exercise,Yoon has incorporated
a fitness program into her initiative. Many children in urban areas lack opportunities to play
outside,so Yoon's organization has donated over 600 bicycles and manages fitness programs
for more than 7,500 children.
Yoon's efforts have inspired others to join her cause. So far, over 10,000 volunteers have
contributed their time to the community garden. What started as a dream for one teenager has
blossomed into a movement that is making a real difference in people's lives, proving that one
person truly can inspire change.
