Outlet and Me
I would like to extend my congratulations on the fifth anniversary of our Outlet!
I have been a regular at Outlet since it was opened five years ago.Every Thursday
afternoon,we gather there to chat freely. We often discuss various topics, from movies to
cultures.I really enjoy the speech contests there.I used to feel nervous to speak in
public. However, those events have improved my spoken English and confidence.
On this special day,I hope Outlet will organize more activities and attract more
students to join us.May it grow and thrive, becoming a family for us to learn English.

A World of Unique New Year Celebrations
Most of us spend the final seconds of each calendar year watching a nearly 12,000-
pound geodesic ball drop over Times Square in New York City.Close to 60,000 audience
gather to see the ball drop in person, but if being one of them is on your dream list,be
forewarned:There are no bathrooms, and to get a good view, you'll likely need to grab
your spot and start holding it around 3 p.m.
New Year's Eve in Scotland is known as Hogmanay. The Scots stretch it into a three-
day celebration starting with a parade through Edinburgh on Dec.30,followed by a
housecleaning known as the redding. Then, during "first footing,"friends and family
visit each other after mid-night to become the first to set foot in each others'homes in the
new year.For good luck,the first visitor should be a tall,dark-haired man,carrying
shortbread, whisky and a lump of coal.So if you find coal in your Christmas stocking,
ship it to your friends in Scotland to use a few days later.
Greeks smash pomegranates ()which symbolize renewal in their culture, for
New Year's celebration. But perhaps an even more unusual practice is waking up children
on Jan.I by tapping them on the head with an onion. It's considered good luck in many
Spanish-speaking nations to eat 12 grapes at midnight-one with each clock strikeon
Jan.1.Estonians sometimes swallow 12 meals on the last day of the year.Germans go for
marzi-pan shaped like pigs, thanks to the phrase "schwein gehabt",which means having
good luck. And the French eat crepes, representing the sun,in hopes of brighter days and
prosperity in the new year, although they do it slightly later,on Feb.2,during a festival
called La Chandeleur.
21.What should be considered by the geodesic ball drop enthusiasts?
A.Personal safety.
B.Viewing location.
C.Weather conditions.
D.Transportation options.
22.What might people do on the last night of the year in Scotland?
A.Dress up as a coal man.
B.Participate in the redding.
C.Welcome the first guest.
D.Watch the Edinburgh show.
23.Which country has a tradition of overeating on New Year's Eve?
A.Greece.
B.Estonia.
C.Germany.
D.France.
